About this qualification
A Small Retail Business Owner runs a small retail business by procuring goods, marketing and selling products and services to customers; and managing small business finances to ensure growth and sustainability, in accordance with applicable industry legislative requirements.
Entrepreneurship and the starting of a small business remain one of the few income generation options for a large percentage of South Africans given the high unemployed figures that have prevailed in the country over the years. The wholesale and retail sector is one of the sectors in which individuals strive to set up and run own small businesses. It is for this reason that the sector initiated the process of realigning the currently registered National Certificate: Informal Small Business Practice, NQF Level 3 in accordance with the Occupations Qualification Sub-Framework (OQSF) policy requirements.
Aspiring and current small retail business owners looking to formalise their skills in procurement, sales, marketing, and business finance for a sustainable, legislatively-compliant retail business.

- Fundamentals of running a small business within the retail sector · 5 credits
- Fundamentals of communication as they apply to a Small Retail Business Owner · 7 credits

- Basic Financial Management in a small retail business · 5 credits
- Procurement and stock control in a small retail business · 5 credits
Practical skills
- Maintain and maintain customer service in a small retail business environment · 8 credits
- Market and sell products and /or services to customers · 10 credits
- Manage, control and record small retail business financials · 15 credits
- Procure goods and manage stock levels · 8 credits
- Perform Basic human resources functions within the scope of a small retail business · 10 credits
Workplace experience

- Mentor / Learner ratio of not more than 1:5 (Customer service maintenance in a small retail business environment)
- Mentor / Learner ratio of not more than 1:3 (Marketing and selling products and /or services to customers)
- Mentor / Learner ratio of not more than 1:3 (Processes related to the management, controlling and recording of small retail business financials)
- Mentor / Learner ratio of not more than 1:3 (Goods Procurement and stock level management)
- Mentor / Learner ratio of not more than 1:3 (Basic human resources functions within the scope of a small retail business)
- Mentors must hold the relevant qualification that is a level higher, with a minimum of two (2) years' relevant industry experience. (Customer service maintenance in a small retail business environment)

Who checks the quality of the training?
The QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations). It sets the standards training providers must meet, approves assessment centres and issues the National Occupational Certificate.
